On Wednesday, April 28, 2021 Paul John Miken passed away at the age of 94.
Paul became a member of the Clackamas county chapter of the Master Gardener program in 1983. His influence can be seen in many of our chapter’s activities. Paul served in many positions for the chapter over the years, including providing coffee for many of the chapter meetings and events. This is how he became known as Mr. Hospitality. He could also be found every January hosting the new crop of interns at Master Gardener Training in Oregon City.
Over 30 years ago he obtained permission from the extension office to sell fuchsias for Mother’s Day. This was the start of our now famous Spring Garden Fair. He was very active working with the fair as it expanded and grew. Many interns worked under his leadership on the Set-up committee, and Hospitality for the Fair and remember seeing him riding his bicycle around the fairgrounds wearing his pink hospitality vest.
Paul was instrumental in setting up an endowment for a scholarship program with Clackamas Community College, funded with revenue from the Spring Garden Fair. In 2017 the Clackamas Community College Foundation changed the name of the “Clackamas Master Gardeners Endowment” to the “Paul Miken Clackamas County Master Gardeners Endowment” in honor of his leadership, dedication and service.
Paul was a friend and willing helper to the community and the Chapter. He will be sorely missed.
