During graduation ceremonies June 15, 2012, Dr Joanne Truesdell, President of Clackamas Community College, presented a Distinguished Friend of the College plaque to the Clackamas County Master Gardeners Chapter for their continued support of the college scholarship program. Paul Miken, who initiated the Chapter's scholarship participation, and Frank Wille, Chapter President accepted the award. Mickey Becker, current Chair of the Scholarship Committee, also participated in the award presentation. According to a CCC spokeswoman, this is the first time that such an award has been presented to an organization instead of an individual.
While Treasurer from 1984 to 1987, Paul promoted the scholarship program and the Chapter began funding individual scholarships. This became an endowment program in 1999 which has since funded more than 40 individual scholarships. Mickey has continued our efforts with the College.
We can all be proud of the scholarships provided from Chapter activities and how many students they have helped. This latest recognition is testimony to how much our efforts are appreciated.
Clackamas County Master Gardeners are the folks who put on the annual Spring Garden Fair, bringing together over 7,000 gardeners with over 150 plant and garden-art vendors.
