Daphnes & Their Relatives

Daphnes are known for their floral perfume, but did you know there are both deciduous and evergreen varieties? Or that some varieties can take full sun? David Palmer will cover a range of the species and hybrids showing habits and origins, including their culture and propagation, as well as highlighting some of the Daphne close relatives.

David is an English born professional horticulturist, having spent much of his career in public horticulture. He started training in Public Parks before earning an Honors Diploma from The Royal Horticultural Society's School of Horticulture at Wisley (200 plus acre garden south of London). David moved to the U.S. in 1980. He spent a year as Director of Sonnenberg Gardens in Canandaigua, upstate New York, before coming to Oregon as Director at the Berry Botanic Garden. David is currently Garden Manager for a large private estate in the West Hills of Portland.

One of the founding members of the Hardy Plant Society of Oregon, David has been an active member of this organization, as well as the local chapter of the American Rock Garden Society.

David has visited several countries throughout Europe and around the Mediterranean, as well as China exploring plants in their native habitats. With his wife Jan, who is a propagator at Bovees Nursery, he spends his spare time tending to their ½ acre plot in West Linn growing as many plants as they can fit in.

Edible Landscaping: Incorporating Edible Plants into Your Garden

Traditionally, edible plants are hidden in the backyard. But, today, smaller lots require a different approach to growing edibles. In fact, many edible plants are beautiful enough to showcase in the front garden.

Master Gardener Jane Collier will review edible plants that look good and are easy to grow. Master Gardener Sherry Sheng will discuss design principles and strategies for incorporating edible plants in your ornamental garden. Both speakers will illustrate their ideas with photographs from gardens of our region.

Prevalent Diseases and Pests of the Home Vegetables Garden – Symptoms, Causes, and Solution

Seasoned gardeners know that part of growing a vegetable garden is learning about common diseases and pests that may visit our garden. Knowing the symptoms allows us to spot trouble early; knowing the causes and solutions allows us to take timely action to minimize damage.

Weston Miller, OSU Extension Agent for the Portland metro region, will provide a comprehensive review of what every home gardener should know. In addition to working as an educator, Weston has developed an organic farm which grows a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.

This presentation is valuable to gardeners who grow vegetables. It is also timely for Master Gardeners who serve clients with an interest in vegetable gardening.

Your own backyard can be a source of the best eggs you have ever tasted. Chickens are endearing birds that require just a small amount of time, space and food. Plants, Pots, Garden Art; Getting It All Together

Gardeners love plants (that is why we garden) and many of us use containers. Mike Darcy finds containers are becoming more and more popular, especially in small space gardens. However in many large gardens, large containers are used as they can easily be moved around and changed as needed with the seasons. Mike will discuss plants (some new, some old stand-bys), incorporating pots into the garden (deck, patio, and the garden itself) and using assorted garden art throughout.

Mike Darcy is well known in the Portland garden community. He has had a garden radio show on KXL for 28 years. He has done garden television programs for OPB, KPTV, and KATU and did garden segments on Good Day Oregon when it first premiered in Portland. He writes a column, What I Am Hearing, for Digger, trade magazine for Oregon Association of Nurseries. His hobby is gardening and he and his wife Linda frequently open their garden to various garden groups.
